This year’s TEDxBoston speakers gave us a unique vantage point into how the reality of machine learning and artificial intelligence is changing the world around us in ways that we see and ways that we don’t see. In partnership with our co-sponsor Fidelity Investments, Collective Next provided speaker coaching and script development, in-depth design/production of talk visuals, and overall content curation. We were the emcees and also provided graphic facilitation at the event.

The mission of the Barbara Lee Family Foundation Theater at the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston, the venue for TEDxBoston 2017, is to share the “…pleasures of reflection, inspiration, provocation, and imagination that contemporary art offers…” This made it an excellent place for us all to be inspired by things like the possibility of autonomous robotics taking us to the stars, or considering what it really means to ask our artificially intelligent tools to explain themselves, and so much more.

Our speaker line up included a pair of filmmakers, a lawyer, AIML researchers, a data scientist, a doctor of emergency medicine, and an oceanographer:

Kenneth Anderson | Law Professor, American University
De-Enchanting AI with the Law

Jim Bellingham | Director, Center for Marine Robotics
Into the Deep Dark

Finale Doshi-Velez | Assistant Professor of Computer Science, Harvard University
The Possibility of Explanation

Barbara Engelhardt | Assistant Professor of Computer Science, Princeton University
Not What but Why: Machine Learning for Understanding Genomics

Ross Goodwin | Creative Technologist
Oscar Sharp | Film Director
Machines Making Movies

Michael Littman | Professor of Computer Science, Brown University
A Cooperative Path to Artificial Intelligence

Ziad Obermeyer | Assistant Professor, Harvard Medical School
If a Machine Could Predict Your Death, Should It?

Claudia Perlich | Chief Scientist, Dstillery
Sacred Gifts and Faithful Servants

The entire program was rounded out by brilliant performances by singer and songwriter Shea Rose, with special guests.

It is always a pleasure, and an honor, to engage with our local community via TedX Boston, and the opportunity to work with these brilliant speakers is a rare gift. All of us on the CN team come away from TEDx Boston energized and inspired by the quality of ideas, the creativity, and the passion focused on that red dot on the TedX stage.
