How is in-person collaboration changing?

As we continue our exploration of the return—and the evolution—of in-person events, we turn this month to some experts.

We sat down with three Solution Designers at Collective Next to see how they’ve been thinking about creating impactful experiences for the clients they support.

A quick Q&A with 3 Solution Designers at CN

Q: What are the big things on your clients’ minds these days as they’re thinking about planning an event?

Hamilton Ray: “People are most concerned about sustainability, affordability, and productivity these days. That’s having a big impact on the fundamentals of how things get designed. We’re thinking a lot about in-person, live events differently as a result, but our designs aren’t suffering because of these considerations. In fact, they’re kind of evolving and getting more interesting.”

Kristen Bailey: “People really value the opportunity to interact face-to-face, especially in the predominantly virtual world. It’s a meaningful human experience where they can have deeper conversations, build on each other’s ideas and creativity more effectively, and generate better solutions.”

Adam Motenko: “Our clients are learning from navigating the hybrid work environment and subsequent decisions to bring people back to the office or not. They’re all, in their own way, trying to figure out how to keep their teams engaged and productive, regardless of what industry they’re in. What I find interesting is how the solutions we’re designing seem to be resonating across these different industries, in ways that are really surprising and useful.”

Q: What are some of the biggest challenges your clients are facing regarding in-person events, from your perspective?

Hamilton Ray: “We’re seeing a new generation in leadership, more millennials taking the helm. They’re bringing their own expectations and preferences when it comes to collaboration. It requires a new mindset and, sometimes, setting aside old ideas and behaviors.”

Adam Motenko: “Budgets are tight. Time is at a premium. There’s a high demand, a need, to be interactive and have space for collaboration.”

Kristen Bailey: “There are always challenges with logistics and costs when participants are coming from other cities/countries. There has to be a strong business case for in-person collaboration.”
