OUR FAVORITE WORK

CN Art Gallery

We built the Art Gallery as a lens to look back on the work we did in 2022. A place to examine the wide range of work that we did and  things that we invented. Each piece represents a project that a CN’er found particularly interesting or challenging in 2022. We hope that it will inspire as we create what’s next!

GRAPHIC DESIGNER

Summer All-Hands Webpage

The Summer All Hands Webpage was a web based project that I got to jump into immediately. This was the first couple of weeks in a new job. I got to work with a mentor that I like. It was really fun to be able to play around with the code, which is an awesome tool. But I’m dyslexic, so it’s not my favorite. This was just a really fun new experience for me. Also everybody seemed to really enjoy having it to interact with. So there was there was a very positive reception for it too!

Akamai Technologies Digital Website Deliverable

I recently completed an event deliverable for an Akamai Leadership Offsite. It interesting because it was the first time that we as CN have offered a deliverable into PowerPoints and this was a website. This project was also very challenging because I was making up process on my own for something we have never done, so it took longer than I projected it to. It was my first instance of any formal art direction.

DE Shaw Recruiting Video

My favorite project was a recruiting video we made for DE Shaw. Multiple things made this a favorite. The client needed help developing a visual style for animation, translating and expanding their existing brand into motion. This was a challenging process but also very rewarding work. The final result is something we were both very happy with. The client was also great to work with, they were passionate about the project and put in the effort to make a really great end product. It also felt like more of a true collaboration or partnership which I think made the final piece stronger. The relationship we developed has definitely been worth it as they have come back to do more work with us!

Alexion Simulations

I think when there’s an opportunity to work on something that requires an end to end longer term, deeper understanding of really the the client and their objectives with all of their stakeholders, that’s exciting. I think that opportunity does feel more meaningful, would be more meaningful than some of these one off things and so that’s more fulfilling.

I think the intellectual and creative diversity that’s part of that project is really interesting. How do you how do you bring to life a day in the life of a character? A patient. Over three pages and a PDF. I think that’s really huge thing. How do you incorporate elements of their story and visual artifacts and audio artifacts and all of these different things and sort of tie it all up in a bow that ultimately, when we pass it to the client, they’re going to be like, this is awesome. That comprehensiveness is a really nice opportunity.

SARAH FRENI

SENIOR GRAPHIC DESIGNER

Alexion STAT Immersion Room

I really liked working on the STAT immersion room. I loved that I was able to work on this project with Annie from beginning to end; to see the pieces we created being used in person become a reality. It was also very challenging, only because of the amount of pieces needed to be produced and set-up, but it’s definitely been the most fun and rewarding project to see through.

We created a relational digital site that will help people have better conversations about money, wealth and estate planning. I think the fact that new skills have been built in the organization on the project is really cool.

SENIOR ART DIRECTOR

Blackrock People Manager Training

It’s been interesting being able to dig into the expansive L&D world and researching new platforms and tools. Figuring out what’s possible. I’d love to learn and vet a new eLearning tool (100% functionality) and create web-based simulations.

SENIOR ART DIRECTOR

Janssen Legend Poster

Early this year I sold a piece of work to develop a poster visualizing the partnership between Janssen and a biotech company, Legend, and their journey together in launching CAR-T. This is a ground breaking cancer treatment therapy and it’s working. This work has since lead to more work – creating a CLM around the Janssen and Legend Aseptic Culture that is essential to saving a patient’s life.

EJ RUDY

DIGITAL SOLUTION ARCHITECT

Alexion Culture Story Microsite

We were very ambitious with our design and technical implementation, which ended up being very rewarding and eye-opening. The Alexion site was a very unique digital project in that it required a lot more collaboration between design and development to accomplish. After productions had created the content for the site and identified key points to Annie. Annie and I would collaborate on creating “vignettes” for each distinct section of a page. Because the site’s elements were not statically located on a page, but rather “introduced” via unique animations triggered by scroll, it took a lot of time for me and Annie to somewhat deconstruct and then reconstruct the distinct vignettes she had mocked up, deciding what elements would be introduced when, how slow/fast elements would animate in and out, and then how everything should behave across different screen sizes.

The implementation was very arduous as well. Because everything was so precisely attuned in the design, every element of every vignette had to be what I would call the code-equivalent of “hand-made”. An apt comparison might be the difference between painting the walls of a house vs. painting an intricate piece of art…there are efficiencies and best practices to incorporate into the painting of walls that allow you to be expedient and effective, whereas the latter requires time, care, and a very close attention to detail.

ZUKHRUF KHAN

FULL STACK DEVELOPER

Quick Math & Elementor Extensions

Working on Quick Math was the first time I was given full command of a ship – I had never been told to code things the way I wanted, from start to finish – since this was a fresh/new codebase/project, there were no conventions or existing versions to try to match my code style to. EJ advised me to structure my code in whatever way I liked, which was both a challenge and a delight – there was a lot of troubleshooting and headbutting at my desk during that time. Nonetheless, EJ helped me troubleshoot the problems and little bugs in my code when needed (it helps to have a second person look at it) and advised me sometimes on the best way to do something. Ev also offered feedback on the front-end developments, as matching a design isn’t always easy.

Now looking at it overall, I’m very glad QM was my first major project with CN. It did drag on more than I wanted it to, but it was a great experience for me, from a learning standpoint and a career development one. I think a new iteration of QM that’s even more interactive (would be awesome to make interactions with Salesforce someday) would be a great future project, and a fantastic learning opportunity to reflect on what worked with this first iteration and what can be coded differently.

So overall, I’m very pleased and grateful to anyone who found QM helpful in any way – let it be for a one-time estimate or something they come back to update every now and then, every project saved in there is special, and I’m happy to discuss how we can make it better and more useful to every CNer. I’m also thankful to Ev and EJ for supporting me on the long and arduous QM journey – I will always treasure it as the first major project I was the primary developer on, and their help and moral support only made it a better experience and product for us all in the end.

Akamai Foundation Annual Report

Renee and Melody have really spearheaded the whole engagement with Kara and the Compassion Fund. One of the things that perpetually comes from being in charge of a nonprofit is you have to publish an annual report. Usually it’s a PDF that gets sent out and and it’s great. But now that we’ve been developing new digital capabilities, we were able to pitch them an updated version where we do it on the web. That’s a really nice way of being able to have it grow and live, and you see the progress of it throughout the years. I think that’s why it’s really great for them. It also allows for multimedia in a way that we weren’t able to do before.

AI for Science Scribing

This was a huge project, and most of the single frames i created after the event form a white paper their team wrote. I’m really proud of the quality of the images – the content was insanely dense, and I’m proud of the relationship I built with my client sponsor, Jess Montgomery.

University of Cambridge Data Trust Initiative

This is the first is a project that Jess and I sold. We started with the support of a two 2 hour virtual events for Data Trust Initiative (Neil Lawrence, who hosts Talking Machines created the program). Jess’ good work led to a few more virtual events! This fantastic work that she supported gave us the opportunity to bring in Mason to sell the design and facilitation of their larger program.

I am so extremely proud of all of the hard work that Jess put in get us to the point have the opportunity bring in our Solution Design Practice, Mason being able to sell this work when given the opportunity and then giving Adam the opportunity to design and facilitate the program. How the team came together to sell this work confirms for me that no matter how small an opportunity is in the beginning, if you are engaged and truly in partnership with a client it can lead to much greater opportunities.

The iPDF for BlackRock- it was a compilation of all of the scribing I did over the course of a year, supporting their Black & Latin-X Leadership Forum. I got to take time to review the work I had done over a long period of time, which is rare for me. I also got a chance to learn a new skill in building the iPDF.

PRODUCER

NF1 PN Sim for Alexion

Letting go of my OM/EA position and handing over projects to Brian because old habits die hard when you’re a Type A. Transitioning from a position that I’ve held for 10+ years into a client-facing role was a challenge!

I really enjoyed making My first REAL piece of client-facing work was the NF1 PN Sim for Alexion! I loved this because I was able to shadow Nick on the process for simulation development from kickoff. I was also able to use my directing skills and experience coaching kids to get a fun and realistic portrayal of Eve and Max.

NICK YRIBAR

PRODUCER/WRITER

Fidelity Digital Operating Model Support

On the Fidelity Operating Model work I attended a lot of sessions and did a lot of documenting and sense making. Just being a sounding board and talking about these ideas and talking about how to communicate them. For part of that we use this tool called Obsidian, which operates in markdown language as a place to map out all of the ideas. It’s basically a piece of software where you can take notes and collect documentation but then link ideas to other things. So we got to create this like mind map of all of these different ideas.

I’ll sit through a session and we’ll listen to these people talk about all these things that they think need to happen and then we’ll write it all up. As part of that write up, you might say, Oh, this is referring to a term, what does this mean? How does it relate to the rest of this giant initiative to change the course of this company? Using Obsidian you can just click on a link and then it pulls up much more information, which might then link out to other items. It was really cool because it’s based on what I was hired for, which is writing and trying to boil these ideas down into like a digestible form, but also connecting the dots between all of these different things.

KATHERINE GORMAN

EXECUTIVE PRODUCER

GoTo MACC Process

This year we really spun up the flywheel at productions. We had such huge demand but only so many hours in the day. In working to create a series of articles for GoTo we started to think more flexibly about the content gathering process and how we could get more out of each step of work that we did. We landed on not only doing audio recordings of our interviews but simply adding video to it as well. Just capturing more than one medium exploded the number of things we could make from one gathering point. We went from text for articles and social media to videos of the interview, video quotes for social media and hopefully a mini documentary with clips from everyone. Keeping track of this amount of content has been an challenge, and I’d love to collaborate with others around making a CN CMS (maybe an CNMS?) for keeping it neat while also delighting clients with something unique. I really want to explore “sustainable content” and “content recycling” more. I’m just the kind of nerd who loves a good archive!

BRIAN KENERSON

OFFICE MANAGER

Summer All-Hands

There was just something about walking into this office. I was like, I’ve got to get my foot in the door. I need to work here. There was just this wonderful creativity and it was so different than anything else I had done before. That’s what really drew me in. I’m the introverted extrovert, and I’m definitely more on the shy side. It felt weird to be able to say two weeks in, I’m planning this massive party for 30 people that I was like, “No, I can do this now.”

HEAD OF ACCOUNTING

Quickbooks Migration and Staffing Changes

It’s been a challenging year with all of the changes that are going on behind the scenes in the back office. I took on some of the things that that Nick had been doing, including onboarding, and as you know, there was a lot of onboarding this year so that was quite a challenge to get sorted.

We have also been moving our accounting out of Excel, and into QuickBooks, which is completely new and unfamiliar to me. We’ve been using Excel for years, so that was another huge change. For me personally, working through this stuff was uncomfortable at times because it required a lot of outside help. I’m a person who likes to work independently, and having to interact with others to get work done doesn’t always feel efficient. Luckily I’ve been able to lean on some great people. My dad, Joe Saiia, CFO for 12 years prior to 2016 was always there to listen. Mistie from Reconciled has been great to work with, and a voice of calm confidence. Others outside of CN – especially those who have helped me understand our benefits better, have been great to work with too. Even though I like to dig in and do things by myself, it’s been good to work with new people, and get outside my comfort zone.

It was a very interactive session of History of the Future and the final scribed output looked great. I think the the attendees were really, really engaged with it. This was the first time that I saw it done live. Even if we couldn’t get all the ideas captured during that specified time, they continued to add everything to the the boards and the visual was very, very impressive.

Renee's Presentation at Alexion

Rene did this exercise with them that I think blew their minds. It also was just very interesting to watch happen and I thought it was really cool. She said that she started off by being like they’re all engineers, by the way.

They were like a very stern and literal group, but she got up in front of them and was like, “You have to talk about your feelings for a minute. Like, we’re going to just for a minute. Just bear with me. How does it make you feel and make you feel great? How do you how do you act and you feel great? What results do you get?” She took them through that exercise before we did individual perspectives, where you have to imagine a future where things are good. I feel like it helped them. To set them up that way was really, really exceptional. I thought and I thought that it worked extremely well. I think it was because of that set up and that we should use it much more often. I think, honestly, that might have been my favorite moment work wise.

I really liked the BRQC Leaders Now AcadeME. The short timeline to do the work was intense and we brought a lot of new thinking into the deliverable, so it challenged the CN team to learn new things to apply to our work. My dream project is one that can evolve appropriately as it become clear what creative intervention is needed.

This is an immersive learning series, created in partnership with historians and academic reviewers to provide accurate and relevant historical content to enhance awareness and understanding of different cultures, experiences and backgrounds. We are helping to affect change, by educating J&J employees and and building a greater understanding about the historic roots of racism and social injustice. We developed accompanying materials to help them determine actions they can take to address inequities in healthcare.

Red Hat Executives Platform

The Red Hat Executive Engagement portal integrated multiple digital solutions, enhanced the likelihood that Red Hatters will use them, and addressed challenges in new ways. It was a it’s a solution that digital enabled us to provide, that hit a real client need. I think the digital nature of it is super cool because it enables like I said, once you build it, it’s always going to need more enhancement features and it needs hosting and security. When you’re building these things and they’re finding them helpful. You can start to put them put the pieces together to make this and even stickier more effective solution. E.J. and Evan have been amazing and, you know, couldn’t ask for a better client than John.

Akamai Foundation Report and Northeastern Card Game

“My favorite project of the year, and the most challenging was creating the art gallery. There were so many parts to bring together!” The gallery Project was brought together by a team of everyone. Its intention was three fold, to allow the capabilities to show off. To familiarize our teams with work they weren’t a part of and to create more marketing assets. It was delivered in December of 2022.

General Mills Global Officers Forum

It was a very interactive session of History of the Future and the final scribed output looked great. I think the the attendees were really, really engaged with it. This was the first time that I saw it done live. Even if we couldn’t get all the ideas captured during that specified time, they continued to add everything to the the boards and the visual was very, very impressive.

GS Miro Learning Lab

Each year Akamai’s Global Services division hosts its ~2300 employees for a multi-day conference to inspire them, share key learnings, and collaborate across groups on improving the customer and employee service experience and refreshing the culture . This past year’s event was virtual and took place in an event platform called Rain Focus which served as the “main campus.” The Miro Learning Lab was created to complement this campus event, which participants were pointed to both before and after the sessions each day. The goals of the Learning Lab were to ignite participants’ minds and spark deeper assimilation of ideas and to help participants operationalize their learnings through collaborative activities that promoted reflection and the sharing of commitments.

Card Game for Northeastern

Based on our ideas, they started a monthly newsletter, and they would send out a meeting in a box and they would promote a principle of their values every month or every two months or something like that. Then they came back to us and said so we’re not getting a ton of great uptake. We want and we want your help to increase engagement and create something sort of for this. Big sort of culmination of this whole program to bring these principles to life. As part of that we created the Card Game It was a favorite because it was unusual, and you can trace the thread from inception through result and see an interesting story. Also, it was a great long-term collaboration internally at CN.

J&J DEI Portal Migration

Helping the DEI team transition the resources and tools on their internal portal (Sharepoint) to a new platform. It was an enormous amount of work, they had critical staff turnover mid-project, and we felt pretty passionate about creating a more streamlined, organized and designed site to improve access to resources and a better user experience vs. a lift and shift of content (they said they wanted better but had a really hard time getting there).

Fidelity Benefits Summit

That human connection that our clients are re-experiencing right now is super important. And I think that the Benefit Summit was amazing this year, to do live events again. You forget how much you miss being in-person, traveling, being on a client site, connecting with people and serendipitous conversations and how that all helps you understand better where your clients at and how you can best support and serve them.

Walton Family Facilitation Training

With this project, we got to share the core of what we do – the art of facilitation – and it will have a positive impact on their system (A family with the ability to have a significant impact on the world we live in). The group responded not only positively to the content, but it unlocked a new level of thinking and feelings for them both as individuals and as a group. The experience was transformative.

I got to work with other folks on the team (Annie, Katia, Jess) where we all pushed ourselves to do something special together. I am so grateful to work with such amazing people. I cherish the connection and collaboration.
