Ways of Working
This summer I had the fine fortune to meet Katie Greenman, the Program Director at City Awake, at a work event. City Awake is the civic innovation lab for Greater Boston. They bring passionate individuals together to help solve some of Boston’s biggest challenges. As someone whose unofficial job title is “collaboration engineer,” I was deeply intrigued. Katie and I chatted, and pretty immediately saw opportunities for City Awake and Collective Next to join forces to help facilitate... More

We recently designed and facilitated one of our biggest sessions of the quarter: an annual multi-day off-site for the top 300 leaders of a financial services company. We are always aiming to stay fresh with our approach to creating engaging, quality activities and content. This year for this exciting session, we brought pop-up podcasting booths. Designed by our Katherine Gorman (Here and Now, Talking Machines), these mini-studios, five in all, were installed throughout the space. Over... More

A pair of gloves. A toy guitar. Passes to the science museum. These are just a few of the things on the holiday wish list provided to me by REACH, a Waltham, MA-based organization that serves survivors of domestic violence. For the third consecutive year, my colleagues and I are coming together to provide a few nice things to a few of REACH’s families in the spirit of the holidays. We have a deep appreciation for good facilitation around here. Ways of Working
Think back to your most recent first day of work at a new company. You were probably feeling excited but also a little, ummm… vulnerable? If it’s been a while, perhaps you have some vague memories of filling out paperwork, learning names and faces, and trying to find the bathroom. I can relate.I joined Collective Next in September. It had been 9 years since I was the newbie and I was pretty anxious. For me, this wasn’t just a job change, it was a career change - albeit a complimentary... More

Ways of Working
There is an old adage (supported with compelling research) that acquiring new customers is exponentially harder than retaining existing ones. Our clients are in constant pursuit of that “Golden Customer” — the one who champions your cause, who tells you what you want to hear AND what you don’t want to hear, and who transitions with you from a disparate set of give-and-take transactions to an ongoing, mutually fulfilling relationship.Good relationships are about honesty, trust, and a... A friend of mine, who is an environmental chemist and not graphically inclined, recently decided to up his game using visuals at work. This self-proclaimed “left-brainer” has been reading up on visual thinking and visual group process – a few of our favorite topics! With that in mind, he inquired about tactical tricks for working visually. Here are a few scribe hacks for visual communicators and collaborators:#1 Make your own marker palette – it’s easy!I make and give away dozens of... More
